Methodological statistician with a strong focus on social, econometric, biomedical, and environmental applications. Authored about 350 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, often accompanied by software packages (mostly for the R software); two books edited by Chapman & Hall, one patent.
Listed by Ioannidis et al. among the top 2% researchers science wide (since 2024 listed also in the “career” table, among only three researchers working in Italy in the area of Statistics & Probability).
Listed as one of the top Italian scientists by Via-academy.
Served on the board of a few international peer reviewed journals, and currently co-editor-in-chief of Statistics & Probability Letters.
He has won two prizes for his PhD thesis, and the international award on Innovation in Blended Learning for his outstanding teaching abilities.
Visiting scholar in a few universities abroad, both for teaching and research. Served as evaluator of funding applications in Italy and other countries, referee for numerous journals; and has collaborated with ANVUR (Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del Sistema Universitario e della Ricerca), prominently as journal expert (defining “class A” and “scientific” journals).
Involved in consulting for several agents, among which the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), the International Organization for Migrations (IOM) of the UN, SPS Italy, InSilico trials, Bank of Italy, the court of appeal of Bologna.
Involved in several “third mission” events; including several appearances on the SkyTG24 channel, and interviews in radio, national, and local newspapers.

Statistical methodology works discuss multiple testing, quantile regression, latent variable models, cluster analysis, population size estimation, robust statistics, among other things. These methodological papers have been published among others in Journal of the American Statistical Association, Biometrika, Annals of Applied Statistics, Scandinavian Journal of Statistics, Biometrics, Statistical Methods in Medical Research, Journal of Statistical Software.
Applied works have been published mostly after collaboration with distinguished scholars in the fields of medicine, genetics, biology, ecology, economic statistics, engineering. Among others, these works have been published in Science Advances, Gastroenterology, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of The American College of Cardiology, Cell Reports, Scientific Reports, Chest, Environmental Microbiology, Biodiversity and Conservation, Journal for Nature Conservation.
